A brief but very important reflection on the reinstatement of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and what it means for the future of occupational health and safety:
For decades, NIOSH has advanced the science to address occupational diseases such as black lung and asbestosis and has led critical research on emerging workplace risks. NIOSH and its scientists are responsible for an impressively long list of enduring contributions—creating scientifically backed standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and establishing a systematic approach to hazard reduction and elimination. It is beyond measure—the number of lives NIOSH has directly saved across manufacturing, mining, and healthcare.
In January 2026, following nine months of collective action by leaders and organizations such as American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), National Safety Council (NSC), American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), and International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), NIOSH was officially reinstated.
After only three months of its workforce restored, there is confidence across the global Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) community. Today, NIOSH’s research and advisory work once again forms the foundation of and is essential to understanding and addressing the evolving challenges in worker protection. Their efforts reinforce the shared mission of our profession and promote scientific progress in occupational health and safety.
